Career & Salary: What is the average salary of a pharmacist in Australia in 2026?

Australia continues to be one of the most attractive destinations for pharmacists in 2026.

Career & Salary: What is the average salary of a pharmacist in Australia in 2026?

A combination of strong demand for healthcare professionals, pharmacist shortages in regional areas, expanding clinical responsibilities, and a good work-life balance has helped maintain steady salary growth across the profession. Whether someone chooses community pharmacy, hospital practice, aged care, or clinical pharmacy services, the profession continues to offer financial stability and long-term career opportunities.

According to ‘Jobs and Skills Australia’, pharmacists remain in demand nationwide. As Australia’s healthcare system continues to expand, pharmacists are taking on broader patient care roles beyond traditional dispensing duties.

In 2026, the average salary of a registered pharmacist in Australia ranges between AUD 80,000–100,000 per year, depending on experience, workplace setting, and location. Additional earnings are often possible through weekend shifts, public holidays, late-night trading hours, and overtime penalty rates.

For internationally trained pharmacists completing the OPRA/APC pathway, the internship year represents the first paid stage after provisional registration. Intern pharmacists in 2026 generally earn around AUD 65,000–80,000 annually, depending on the employer and the state where they work. Hospital internship programs may sometimes offer slightly higher pay than community pharmacy placements, particularly within public hospital systems. Many interns also increase their income through weekend work or rural placements.

Community pharmacy remains the largest employment sector for pharmacists in Australia. Registered community pharmacists commonly earn AUD 45–60 per hour, roughly AUD 82,000–105,000 annually. Pharmacists working as Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC), pharmacy managers, or those employed in high-volume metropolitan pharmacies may earn more. Rural and remote pharmacies frequently provide additional incentives such as relocation packages, accommodation support or retention bonuses to attract staff.

Locum pharmacy work has also become increasingly popular. In some regional areas, locum pharmacists reportedly earn AUD 70–90 per hour, especially where pharmacist shortages are more severe. The flexibility and higher hourly rates make locum work appealing for many experienced pharmacists.

Hospital pharmacy continues to grow as a clinically focused career pathway in Australia. Hospital pharmacists in 2026 generally earn between AUD 85,000–120,000 per year, while senior clinical pharmacists may earn AUD 110,000–135,000 annually. Public hospital salaries are usually determined through government pay scales and enterprise agreements. Additional allowances may apply for on-call services, oncology, intensive care, emergency medicine, and other specialised clinical roles. Many pharmacists are drawn to hospital practice because of the strong clinical exposure, multidisciplinary teamwork, and opportunities for career advancement.

Location also plays a major role in pharmacist salaries across Australia. Some of the highest-paying regions in 2026 include Port Hedland and the Pilbara region in Western Australia, where salaries reportedly exceed AUD 179,000. Northern Territory regional areas offer salaries above AUD 140,000, while rural Queensland and regional New South Wales commonly exceed AUD 130,000 annually. Hobart, Tasmania, also remains a strong-paying location, with salaries around AUD 130,000. Regional Australia often pays significantly more than major metropolitan cities because recruiting healthcare professionals to remote areas remains challenging.

Pharmacy in Australia now offers much more than a stable income. Pharmacists are increasingly involved in vaccination services, chronic disease management, medication reviews, aged care support, prescribing collaborations, and direct patient counselling. For internationally trained pharmacists preparing for the OPRA pathway, Australia continues to provide excellent career stability, competitive salaries, and strong long-term professional growth.
