What Is AHPRA Provisional Registration?

Provisional registration is a temporary license that allows overseas-qualified pharmacists to work under supervision while completing their internship in Australia.

Eligibility for Provisional Registration

To apply for AHPRA provisional registration, you must:

1. Pass the OPRA® Exam conducted by the APC.
2. Hold a recognised pharmacy qualification approved by the APC.
3. Meet English language proficiency standards (IELTS, OET, PTE, or TOEFL).
4. Provide valid identity documents, including passport and proof of name change (if applicable).
5. Provide a certificate of good standing from your home country or wherever you are registered.

How to Apply for AHPRA Provisional Registration (Online Process)

The process is now fully online. There’s no need to download or post forms.

Step-by-step process:

1. Create an account on the official AHPRA website (www.ahpra.gov.au).
2. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) using your mobile phone. Each login will require a security code sent by AHPRA.
3. Log in to your dashboard and select Pharmacist – Provisional Registration.
4. Complete the online form, answering eligibility and qualification questions.
5. Upload all supporting documents:

• Passport and identity proof
• Pharmacy qualification and transcript
• OPRA® exam result letter
• English language test result (if applicable)
• Certificate of good standing

6. Make the payment (approx. AUD 440) online via card.

7. Submit your application. You will receive a confirmation email and application tracking number.

Checking Your Identity with InstaID+

All applicants must verify their identity using InstaID+, a secure independent provider.

• After submitting your application, InstaID+ will email a secure link to complete the proof-of-identity check online.
• It can take up to 48 hours for this link to arrive. Check your junk/spam folder.
• The link is valid for 30 days. If not completed within this period, your application will be withdrawn, and your registration fee refunded.

What to do during the identity check:

• Complete the check via desktop (with webcam) or mobile.
• Take a selfie with your photo ID and photos of your identity documents.
• If your name has changed, provide supporting documents.
• InstaID+ verifies document authenticity, performs facial recognition and liveness tests, and confirms identity against official databases.

Important:

• If you do not receive the link within 48 hours, submit an online enquiry to AHPRA.
• Do not contact InstaID+, as they cannot resend links or results.

After verification, InstaID+ sends results directly to AHPRA. Your application may not move immediately if other checks are pending, such as criminal history or certificate of good standing, or if your application is awaiting assignment to a case officer.

Ensure you have clear, certified electronic copies ready before starting:

• Passport (photo and signature page)
• Pharmacy qualification and transcript
• OPRA® exam result letter
• English language test result (if required)
• Certificate of good standing
• Recent passport-size photograph

All documents must be in English or translated by a NAATI-certified translator.

What Happens After You Apply

• AHPRA reviews your application and may request additional details.
• Once approved, you’ll receive an email confirming your Provisional Registration.
• You can then begin your internship placement under supervision.
• Provisional registration is valid for 12 months, during which you must complete 1,824 hours of supervised practice before applying for general registration.

When setting up your account:

• You will create a unique InstaID (login ID).
• Always keep your registered phone active to receive MFA codes for every login.
• Your InstaID+ identity verification link and completion are tied to this account.
