If you’re planning to register with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), demonstrating your English language competence is a mandatory step. Whether you are a pharmacist, dentist, nurse, or any other healthcare professional, you must meet AHPRA’s English Language Skills Registration Standard.
This ensures that all registered practitioners can communicate effectively in English to provide safe and high-quality healthcare in Australia.
How Can You Meet the English Language Standard?
AHPRA provides four pathways to prove your English language skills:
- Combined Education Pathway
- School Education Pathway
- Advanced Education Pathway
- Test Pathway
Most international applicants, especially those educated outside recognised English-speaking countries, use the Test Pathway.
1. Combined Education Pathway
Use this if you have completed:
- At least two years of secondary education taught and assessed entirely in English in a recognised country, and
- A professional qualification (e.g., Bachelor of Pharmacy or Dentistry) taught entirely in English in a recognised country.
This is ideal for applicants whose schooling and university education were both in countries like Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, USA, or Canada.
2. School Education Pathway
Use this pathway if:
- English is your main language, and
- You completed at least 10 years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed entirely in English in a recognised country, and
- Your professional qualification was taught in English (can be in any country).
This suits those who completed most of their schooling in English-speaking countries.
3. Advanced Education Pathway
Use this if you have:
- Completed at least six years of full-time education taught entirely in English in a recognised country, including:
- Your professional qualification, and
- Advanced tertiary education (AQF level 7 or higher).
- The last period of study was completed within two years of applying for registration.
- Short study breaks of up to two years are acceptable.
4. Test Pathway
If you haven’t studied in a recognised English-speaking country, you can meet the standard by achieving the required scores in approved English tests:
Test: IELTS (Academic)
Overall Score: 7.0
Minimum Component Scores: Listening 7.0, Reading 7.0, Speaking 7.0, Writing 6.5
Test: OET (profession-specific)
